Episode 80 — Select Authorization Approaches: SSO, RBAC, ABAC, Rules, Tokens, Certificates
When students first encounter authorization terminology, it can feel like a pile of overlapping buzzwords, especially because some terms describe how users sign in while others describe how permissions are decided and carried. In this episode, we’re going to untangle that pile and build a clear, practical way to select authorization approaches that fit different systems and risks. You will see Single Sign-On (S S O) as a way to centralize authentication and reduce the number of separate sign-in experiences, which changes how identity is presented to applications. You will also see models like Role-Based Access Control (R B A C) and Attribute-Based Access Control (A B A C) as ways to decide whether an identity can do something, based on roles or based on attributes and context. The key architectural point is that these are not competing brands that you pick once; they are building blocks that can be combined thoughtfully. The advantage is that it scales well for governance because you can review role assignment rather than individual rights, and role definitions can be aligned with job responsibilities. The risk is that R B A C can drift into role sprawl, where too many roles exist, or role bloat, where roles accumulate permissions and become overly powerful. The advantage is precision and adaptability, because the system can enforce nuanced rules that shift automatically as attributes change. This can be especially useful when R B A C feels too coarse, such as when many teams share the same application but access depends on project membership, region, customer ownership, or data sensitivity. The risk is complexity and attribute reliability. If attributes are stale, inconsistent, or easy to manipulate, A B A C decisions become unpredictable, leading to both security gaps and user lockouts. They also select them because tokens can be scoped, meaning they can represent limited permissions and limited time validity. The danger is overloading tokens with too many claims or making tokens too long-lived, which increases the damage if they leak and can make revocation difficult. Another risk is trusting token claims that are stale, such as relying on a token’s embedded role claim even after a user’s role was revoked, especially if tokens live for long periods. Architects manage this by choosing appropriate token lifetimes, designing refresh patterns, and deciding which decisions can rely on token claims and which require live checks. For beginners, the practical takeaway is that tokens are powerful for carrying authorization context, but they require careful handling to avoid turning every request into an opportunity for replay or misuse.
Certificates play a different role in authorization approaches because they are closely connected to identity assurance and trust relationships, especially for systems and services rather than individual users. The tradeoff is lifecycle complexity, because certificates expire, must be renewed, and must be revoked if compromised. If certificate management is weak, outages can occur or untrusted certificates can be accepted. Architects select certificate-based approaches when they need strong identity binding for systems and devices, and when they can manage the lifecycle reliably through processes and monitoring. For beginners, it helps to view certificates as durable identity credentials for machines that enable strong trust, but only when the organization treats certificate lifecycle as a first-class operational responsibility.
